Jamie Halfhide, Head of strategic growth at BIC Consolidated

Tell us about your role at BICC.

What do you do, and where are you based?

My role is Head of Strategic Growth at BICC, and I’m based in Sydney Head Office.

What spurred/motivated you to get into commercial property services and pursue a career in it?

I was actually born into the industry. My father worked for Crothall's back in the late 70’s (which later became Berkley Challenge), and then was the first State Manager for Menzies when they expanded into the NSW market. In the early 80’s, my father started his own commercial cleaning business, which I worked in as a teenager, helping to clean banks and stripping and sealing periodicals, etc. After leaving school, I worked in the business full time and studied Law/Business part time. The rest, as they say, is history.

What does a typical day look like for you?

What's something people might be surprised to learn about your job?

No two days look the same for me. Depending on what we’re working on at the time, I can be conducting site visits and walkthroughs for tenders, working through pricing returnable sheets, reviewing contracts, meeting/talking with clients and potential clients, conducting presentations, and lots of phone calls!

Being a truly national business, I’m typically spending time each month meeting our wonderful teams and clients around the country and assisting the local teams to generate long term partnerships.

What’s one thing you really enjoy about working at BICC?

The people – we have a truly incredible team at BICC, a passionate group of experts who make the work we do so much fun! We work hard but take time out together to share the successes and challenges along the way, supporting each other to achieve the results.

What’s something you’re proud of in your work, or a moment that stands out?

What makes me the proudest of all in what I do is being privileged to lead an amazing team, providing guidance and mentorship as required, and then seeing them truly blossom and grow into future leaders of the business.

When we all work together as a team from all departments and internal SME’s, and secure major retention wins in a highly competitive and tightly contested market (such as retaining Rialto, Darling Park, and Walkers PSQ), this also makes me very proud!

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

I love my family and love spending time with them. I have two young boys who are “sport obsessed” and I typically spend a fair amount of time as a logistics manager getting them to and from all the various training and sports events each week.

We also love travelling and were fortunate to have been to Spain earlier this year, which was amazing to share with the family.

I’ve recently signed up to play cricket for the local club with a few of the other dads, which is a lot of fun!

If you could share one thing with someone who doesn’t know much about the cleaning/property services industry, what would it be?

The one thing about the cleaning/property services industry is that we typically have unrestricted access behind the scenes of some amazing and incredible locations around the country!

In my time, I’ve had the privilege of working on some iconic projects, such as the Sydney Opera House, the SCG, the Australian Open Tennis Tournament/Melbourne Olympic Park, Top Secret Military Locations/Bases, and other iconic buildings, where you get to see first-hand what the majority of the population would never get to see or even know existed.

As a sports fan, being privileged enough to go back of house during a major international sporting event (Australian Open Tennis) as a part of the site walkthrough and assessment process for the tender was incredible.
